{"id":2250,"date":"2021-11-12T01:38:52","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T01:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.ctma.com.cn\/?p=2250"},"modified":"2021-11-12T01:40:08","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T01:40:08","slug":"a-new-theory-on-how-green-tea-promotes-longevity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.ctma.com.cn\/index.php\/2021\/11\/12\/a-new-theory-on-how-green-tea-promotes-longevity\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Theory on How Green Tea Promotes Longevity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From: Tea Biz by Dan Bolton<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.cn\/dms\/image\/C5612AQHMvH4pixfowQ\/article-cover_image-shrink_720_1280\/0\/1636511699660?e=1642032000&amp;v=beta&amp;t=0wRjGiiwiEFfYb3SdEmwvkDhRKrrUZnw0MWwrv2zlV4\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2021\/10\/green-tea-catechines-promote-oxidative-stress.html\" target=\"_blank\">ETH Z\u00fcrich<\/a>&nbsp;have discovered that green tea catechins are not passive antioxidants but pro-oxidants that act to strengthen cells against attack by free radicals, leading to longer life and greater fitness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the presence of green tea catechins increases oxidative stress for a short while which has the subsequent effect of strengthening the defensive capabilities of the cells and the organism, according to study leader Dr. Michael Ristow, professor for Energy Metabolism at the University&#8217;s Department of Health Sciences and Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCatechins, aren\u2019t in fact antioxidants, but rather pro-oxidants that improve the organism\u2019s ability to defend itself, similar to a vaccination,\u201d said Ristow. \u201cGreen tea activates genes that produce certain enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CTL) that deactivate free radicals in nematodes, the test organisms chosen for the study,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings from the study translate well to humans, said Ristow. \u201cThe basic biochemical processes by which organisms neutralize oxygen free radicals are conserved in the evolution history and are present in everything from unicellular yeast to humans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His findings appear in the October issue of the peer-reviewed journal&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.18632\/aging.203597\" target=\"_blank\">Aging<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nTian J, Geiss C, Zarse K, Madreiter- Sokolowski CT, Ristow M: Green tea catechins EGCG and ECG enhance the fitness and lifespan of&nbsp;<em>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/em>&nbsp;by complex I inhibition.
