Located in the southeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Nyingchi is where snow-capped mountains, canyons, forests, river valleys and rainforests converge. The moisture-laden airflow formed by the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, together with the unique terrain shaped by Mount Namcha Barwa and surrounding mountains, has nurtured a humid, clean and diverse ecological environment. Glacier meltwater, mountain mist, abundant rainfall and a wide temperature difference between day and night provide distinctive conditions for the growth of highland tea trees, giving Nyingchi tea its unique ecological character.

Nyingchi’s tea industry has a long history of development. In 1964, Nyingchi black tea attracted attention at a tea evaluation event in the autonomous region. In 1993, Yigong Tea Farm developed large-scale tea gardens at an altitude of about 2,200 meters. In 2013, the opening of the Motuo Highway created new opportunities for the local tea industry to access the market. Today, Motuo, Zayü, Yigong and other areas continue to advance tea garden development, processing upgrades and brand building based on their strong ecological advantages and cultivation foundations. Nyingchi tea has gradually become an important industry supporting ecological agriculture and rural revitalization.

At present, Nyingchi’s tea industry is moving toward standardization, ecological development and modernization. The city now has 54,000 mu of tea gardens, including 6,096 mu of organically certified tea gardens, while 16 tea enterprises continue to strengthen green production and quality control. Motuo and other areas have introduced intelligent production lines to improve the stability and efficiency of tea processing. As of May 2025, Nyingchi had harvested 446,600 jin of fresh tea leaves, generating an output value of RMB 25.8441 million, further consolidating the industry’s foundation.

In terms of brand building, Nyingchi is leveraging its ecological advantage as a “pure land on earth and the most beautiful Nyingchi,” highlighting the features of “high-altitude cultivation, rigorous standards, and premium quality” while advancing the development of the regional public brand “Nyingchi Tea.” The city has now formed 10 major brand trademarks and 68 products across 14 series. Products such as “Yigong Yunwu,” “Nyingchi Chunlü,” “Lotus Secret Land” and “Himalayan Sacred Tea” are gradually gaining greater market influence.

Nyingchi is also promoting the integration of tea with culture and tourism. Motuo tea gardens, the Yigong Tea Culture Festival and the Gelin Village Tea Garden Scenic Area combine tea garden landscapes, ethnic culture and tea-making experiences, expanding the consumption scenarios of the tea industry. As tea mountains become scenic spots, tea factories become exhibition spaces and tea farmers take part in tourism services, Nyingchi tea is evolving from a single agricultural product into a driver of ecological sightseeing, cultural experience and branded consumption.

A cup of Nyingchi tea carries the natural gifts of snow mountains and grand canyons, while also reflecting the vitality of highland ecological agriculture, modern processing, brand development and tea-tourism integration. With tea as a bridge, Nyingchi is presenting to the world the ecological value, industrial potential and cultural charm of the snowy plateau.
